Project Review of the Uganda village Phone Project
key-subject: universal access, micro-finance, rural telecommunications
client-type: financial institution
On behalf of the IFC, Intelecon conducted a project review of the Grameen Foundation USA (GFUSA) - MTN Uganda villagePhone project. The study included a thorough assessment of the program from the perspective of technology; market demand and marketing strategies; regulatory aspects; overall project viability; and effectiveness. Intelecon also identified lessons learned from the Uganda experience which could be considered as part of a larger, pan-African VP replication strategy. As part of its study outputs, Intelecon designed four different VP business models that would provide a greater choice of operational styles, VP Operator selection criteria and objectives to match the diverse and highly competitive telecom environments found across the continent and in other parts of the developing world.
