Nigeria Community Phone Company (CPC) Business Plan

countries: Nigeria
key-subject: universal access, telecommunications, micro-finance
client-type: financial institution

Intelecon, on behalf of the IFC, undertook a comprehensive feasibility study of a 'for-profit' Community Phone Company (CPC) that was proposed for IFC financial support by MTN Nigeria (MTNN) and the Growing Businesses Foundation (GBF).

Intelecon worked with the partners to design a viable, sustainable business model for the CPC operations. In addition, Intelecon assessed the CPC's opportunities for success from the perspective of the Nigerian marketplace; technology; competition; telecom regulations; operational and micro-finance components. Also considered were the economic empowerment imperatives within MTNN's corporate social responsibility (CSR) mandate and GBF's small business and micro-finance development focus.

In 2006, MTNN's re-branded Rural Phone Project was short listed for the 2006 GSM Association award in the category of Best Mobile Community Service.
