Intelecon is currently working with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and GSM operator MTN Nigeria on a significant new initiative – financed by a Dutch trust fund – designed to extend public phone service to rural Nigerians. Known as the Community Phone Company (CPC), the initiative involves financing local entrepreneurs through a microcredit loan program so they can purchase MTN mobile phones. The entrepreneurs provide public payphone service with their mobile phones, which are equipped with a special antenna, thus allowing the CPC entrepreneurs to operate in areas with no other terrestrial phone service. Intelecon is currently working with various stakeholder groups on CPC business planning activities.
